A lot of insulation advice is written for cold, dry places. Northeast Louisiana is neither. The numbers that shape our recommendations come from NOAA, the DOE, and FEMA.
Two forces damage homes on the Ouachita: the everyday humidity that rots crawl spaces and grows mold, and the periodic flooding that soaks whatever it reaches. The 2016 floods that devastated much of Louisiana hit Ouachita Parish hard, and the Ouachita River at Monroe is monitored around the clock for exactly that reason. Spray foam — and closed-cell foam in particular — is one of the few building materials that answers both threats at once.
The flagship
Most insulation soaks up water and has to be torn out after a flood. Closed-cell spray foam doesn’t. The Department of Energy describes it as hydrophobic — it “will not absorb water” — and essentially moisture-vapor impermeable, so it works as an air barrier and a moisture barrier at once. Because it resists water, FEMA’s current flood-damage-resistant materials guidance lists closed-cell spray polyurethane foam as an acceptable flood-damage-resistant material for use below the flood elevation.
For a flood-prone Monroe home, that combination is exactly right: about R-6 per inch of insulation, complete air and moisture sealing against our humidity, and water resistance that makes recovery after a flood far easier. It’s the work we’re known for, and for many homes on the Ouachita it’s where we’d start.
How we work

There are two main types of spray foam, and the right one depends on the job. Closed-cell foam is denser, delivers about R-6 per inch, and acts as an air barrier, a moisture barrier, and a water-resistant layer — the correct choice for crawl spaces, flood-exposed areas, metal buildings, and most of our climate. Open-cell foam is lighter, about R-3.6 per inch, an excellent air-sealer and sound-dampener, and a cost-effective choice for interior walls and certain attics. We’ll tell you which fits, and why, instead of defaulting to whatever’s most profitable.
